Milford Sound in New Zealand is one of the most magical places I've ever been. It is an ancient glacial fjord, a deep channel to the sea carved by retreating ice of glaciers millennia ago. The water runs a mile deep. The heavy, lumbering mountains left behind are nearly a mile high.
On our honeymoon, we had the rare privilege of spending the night on a small cruising boat (capacity 100 passengers) anchored in the middle of the Sound. We awoke before dawn to the announcement that breakfast would be served in half an hour. Dragging ourselves out of bed was more than worth it, as we got to witness the heavy fog slowly lifting over the Sound. In the eerie bluish light of pre-dawn, the hills seemed higher and heavier in contrast to what slowly became feathers of fog tickling their middles. The tiny smudge in the middle of this photo, the one that looks like a ripple in the water, that's the size of our boat in contrast to this massive nature around us.

WOW... amazing. I love to travel. I can;t wait for my kids to see the world with me. AWESOME picture!
Stunning. What I wouldn't give to travel there someday.
Sandy and Huckdoll, you have the word totally right: stunning. It's like being in another world.
OhMommy, I too look forward to seeing the world with my kids -- though the 24 hours of travel to New Zealand won't happen while anyone is still wearing diapers!
I didn't even think of heavy fog. We saw similar heavy fog in one of the fjords of Alaska's Inside Passage last suby and mmer when we were curising. Come see my heavy snow.
I would want to yell "BOOGA" or something to hear the echo, but I'd be way too cowed to do it. Gorgeous photo.
Hahaha, Foolery, you are seriously funny. (can you be seriously funny??) I didn't think of that. I think we might have gotten dirty looks from our fellow passengers, but it would have been very funny to try...
