Corduroys: Yes or No?

So here's a fashion question posed to me by Husband this morning: "Are corduroys out of style?"

You may contend they never were in style for anyone over the age of six. However, please recall that we live in Michigan, went to graduate school in Wisconsin, and have lived in and worn out our fair share of corduroys.

His question is prompted by having lost 20 pounds and consequently rediscovered stacks of pants that once again fit -- corduroys among them. But as he put it, "Now they fit again, only I realize I don't think I see anyone wearing them anymore." Perhaps this is because he is no longer 20-something and part of the grad school shabby chic crowd? Indeed, he has a real office job with stock options. But the office is "business casual" everyday and blue jeans casual on Fridays. The corduroys he is contemplating are very fine wale and unobtrusively styled.

So, dear readers, as I am not generally known as a fashion maven, can you tell me whether he should WEAR or DONATE these pants? Or where I should look to find out?

Oh no! Why do you put this kind of style pressure on us??!! We need to call in Stacey & Clinton from What Not To Wear! They'll be able to tell us what to do with corduroy (did I even spell that right?)

If you were donating them, can you please send them to me. I love me some cords. My vote would be to keep them, however, I live in cord, long-sleeve tees, and converse. The same uniform I wore in college. I am pretty much fashion road-kill.

I still sport my corduroys! I'm not part of the 20-something or office crowd either. My rule, if it's not bright, fits, feels and looks good- it's a keeper :)

Since I just bought some with you, I like to think they are okay. I see some guys at my work where them, but they are not fashion icons. :-) I'd go for it. At the least, he can wear them at home.

Good job husband on 20 lb weight loss!

Hey, I'm a guy (even though I'm told I have a strong feminine side). I wear what I like, what makes me feel comfortable and as long as the colors match reasonably well, Annie will let me out of the house in almost anything. So I wear my cords, when it's not too warm. Because there isn't much worse than a sweaty fat man in corduroys. Except, perhaps, a sweaty fat woman - in cords.

Well, you could look to the Milan Fashion Week (end of February, I think), where apparently Dolce & Gabbana, the kings of sexy, included corduroys in their collection.... I'd say, as long as they aren't baggy around the general rump area, go for it!

I have black cords and brown cords. I never even thought about whether or not they were "in" - hunh. Lots of people 'round here wear them. But then, the Yukon is not exactly known as the Mecca of fashion.

You see, here's the thing -- for women, I think it's easy to get cords that are cut nicely (like a good pair of blue jeans) and look great on the weekends. I personally love to wear them too. On men, it can be a little different. I am heartened by the Dolce and Gabana example, however, which bodes well. Also by the fact that Iceel wears them too...

The most hilarious thing, though, is that if you've ever met Husband, you would know that he is even farther from fashion maven than I am. So it's a funny question coming from him.

I think they're great...comfy and warm, but not with pleats!!! If they have pleats, ditch 'em.

I think cords are great for women for the reasons you mentioned in your comment here. I haven't seen many cords on guys around here, but we're down in Texas, it's all cargo shorts!

I wear my 1 year old Ralph Lauren corduroys once a week. They are definitely in style.

Kudos to hubby on the 20-lb weight loss. Can he send pointers to my husband??

I think he's ok on the cords provided they're of a decent cut. I agree with whoever said they shouldn't be baggy around the ass. So true.

i am 100% with kelly. with a good pair of old skool shoes, long sleeve and/or waffle tees, cords totally rock. as far as business casual, i have a personal problem with guys wearing cords in a dressy way...

it may remind me of high school teachers or long ago :P

Husband wears cords to work sometimes. His office is a bit dressier than your hubby's, so it's usually reserved for Fridays, but he has some that look nice enough and are quite comfy when it's sleeting out and there's 6" of snow on the ground! My caveat? Make sure the "bumps" of the cordoruy haven't worn down. He has one pair that have smooth knees and bumps everywhere else. These, I have relegated to the messy-project-in-the-basement pile. And I agree, pleats and bagginess are out!

Husband totally appreciates your input. I will personally inspect for shabby knees or a saggy behind. He snorted when I suggested they might have pleats (which would be a no no), so I guess we're safe of that score. Thanks for all your help!

Right now I am wearing black, skinny, boot cut cords that make my butt look like it did when I was 18. No way in hell am I tossing them. Cords 4eva.

Guys on the other hand...unless he's got a skateboard, Vans and the pants are falling off his butt showing a sexy belt, I think not.

I have to say, my husband is WAY more the fashion maven than I am... ok, that's really not saying much at all if you know me.... how 'bout this - back when I first met him, his wardrobe was 4x the size of mine, he had about 5x as many shoes and always looked like something stepping out of a fashion mag. Now is job is more casual than previously and we do live in MI now so it's chillier, but he wears cords all winter. Recently we were talking about going to buy him a few more pairs so he'd have new ones for next winter. I totally trust his sense of fashion judgment (he often dresses me when I need to look good) and since he says yes to cords, I have to too.
