We've had a few go-to jokes, gags, and brags this summer. Most recently, Son has been wandering out of his room 2, 3, or 29 times per evening to say he cannot sleep and needs to be tucked in again. Getting tired of this, I finally told him a few weeks ago that this was his "last tuck, and after that, I'm turning into a Pirate." Much to my delight, he knew exactly what I meant, and responded gleefully, "NO TUCKING! the crew cried."
In case you do not have an avid Pirate-wannabe in your house: The book How I Became a Pirate has a great sequence in it where little Jeremy Jacob is on the pirates' ship, going to sleep, and discovers that the Pirates have no books to read (only maps) and that they don't believe in tucking in bed. So this has become our nightly shorthand. He gets one free extra tuck in bed, and then I "become a Pirate" -- which means, of course NO MORE TUCKING.
The other night, though, he asked me HOW I would turn into a Pirate. "I just will. I'm magic," I replied, without thinking much about my answer. "But you're not a Fairy Godmother. Or a Fairy," he said. "So how?"
He had me there. But oh, wouldn't it be nice to be a Fairy Godmother?
Other constant refrains this summer include Son and Daughter's favorite inside joke, which never fails to crack them up helplessly. They press their foreheads to each other's and chant...

I'm starin' in ya eye. I'm starin' in ya eye.
And then there's the ever popular:
Mama, look at me!
followed by some explanation of what I'm supposed to witness:
I can go higher by myself!

Or the matter-of-fact:
I ready go swimming now.

In addition to endless requests to go to the swimming pool, we've had a series of favorite spots: Let's go to the library! Let's go to the gym! Let's to to the playground!
It's been a busy, fun, activity-filled summer. Made even better by the vacation we're just wrapping up. Oh, yes. MommyTime has been taking advantage of the post-ahead scheduler for the past few days. Where has the Time family been, you wonder? Great stories and photos coming soon. For now, I'll leave you with this. Try it yourself sometime. It's a laugh riot.
I'm starin' in ya eye. I'm starin' in ya eye. I'm starin' in ya eye.

I love this! I love those games and rhymes that kids make up that have some meaning or level humor that parents just don't get. My daughters used to do this thing where they'd put their thumb in front of the other child's face and say "Hot Bol Sandwich" and that was then hysterically funny. To them.
You've summed up a wonderful summer very well.
Wonderful post!
I'm starin ya in ya eye RIGHT NOW. So cute!!
I actually giggled a little as I read the "starin in ya eye" part. It apparently IS a laugh riot. :-)
That is really cute. Baby G was one to get the goggles on all the time and be ready to go too!
Your kids are so cute!! And they like each other. Which is good. Very good.
Oh, how I love you MommyTime! And I love your kids. Isn't it great that they love to go swimming, play in the park, or read in the library, rather than asking for the TV or Wii? And also that they're so darned cute and photogenic?
The best part will be when they are in their thirties and still staring each other in the eye and laughing hysterically.
it is so cute that they have that bond and that you have found positive way to avoid the extra "tucks" this hasn't worked in my house so my and my big ol belly duck under a bunk bed to tuck them in as tight as I can but nothing.
i think i'm about to give up, at least until Little Dancer is born!
Love the pics! they are the cutest!
How sweet that they have their own thing they do together - like a secret handshake almost!
DARLING shots and anecdotes. But my favorite? The goggles picdtures. Can't beat the cuteness there!
Aww, they are so cute! And I love your pirate game.
I tried starin in the eye thingee with a co-worker, let me just say, NOT the same laugh riot.
I'll try it later with my man.
LOL, cute kids. Looks like fun was had by all!
We do the eye thing, too! Only it was part of our bedtime routine for a long time. When you do it you chant, in foghorn-style tones, "ONE BIG EYE!" If you do it right the other person's eyes join like a cyclops.
Your children are SO beautiful.
That DOES sound like a wonderful summer.
My summer refrain was, "What are we going to do today??????"
Again and again and again and again and you get the idea.
We have the eye thing, too, but we put our eyes close and say "OWLEE OWLEE OWLEE" cuz it looks like you have a great big eye.
My mom did it to us as kids and I find myself doing it to my kids now.
I love the latest posts about your summer antics and trips. Cute family!!
