Absolutely Bananas is kindly offering weekly prompts for post topics and linking up everyone who participates. Oddly enough, while I'm rarely at a loss for words -- even, some would say, inclined to over-write at times -- for this prompt I was inspired to follow her lead and let my pictures largely speak for themselves.
So, rather than disquisitions on deep philosophical points, rather than funny anecdotes or heartwarming stories, I'm simply giving you a list of the top ten lessons my children have taught me. Some are more profound than others. But all are things I think I really could not have fully appreciated before having children, no matter how often they were drummed into my head.
Without further ado, then, the list:
1. Any word can become an insult, if you master the proper intonation. Or follow it with the word "butt."
2. Art is most satisfying when you use the supplies in unexpected ways.3. Temper tantrums happen more often out of frustration than out of contrariness.
4. Improvisation is a super power.
5. Looking forward to tomorrow can sometimes interfere with having fun today.
6. It's worth looking at the world upside down on a regular basis.
7. Good sleep is as important as air, water, and food for survival.
8. Cleanliness is overrated.9. The most mundane things become exciting and new again, if you simply change the setting in which they occur.
10. Slow down. Life is magical.

Those are totally sweet, love the photographic evidence.
I just loved that post! What beautiful (and SMART) children you have!
Perfect. Just perfect. You're just so stinkin' creative, lady.
I loved this post too. And don't worry, I will never, ever even while drinking say your children are not as cute as a dog....What I'm trying to say is your children are beautiful.
So very true, all of it.
Really, really great photos!
great list!! love the little wish at the end!
An absolutely loving and lovely post.
Improvisation is a super power-- I *love* that!!! Do you mind if I steal it?
Beautiful list! Great pictures to follow it up with. And allll of those are true life lessons.
Awesome list! Beautiful photos!
I have to say that the picture for #4 cracked me up! I have two little boys and that is exactly what they do!
I can't agree with #7 enough! I have an almost-five-month old who sleeps through the night. It is HEAVEN!
The photos are the sweetest things about this post! I'll check out Bananas--thanks for the tip! BTW, Uncle Lynn has authorized another Great Pop'rs Giveaway--it starts tomorrow, so stay tuned!
Awe.
Beautiful.
Cleanliness is overrated. I kept saying that to myself as I observed Fifi picking up a strawberry tainted with soil.
Great list! Love the pictures, especially #10. The super power one made me laugh - hee hee Boys will turn anything in to a gun and fight off evil!
I feel the need to print this out and hang it on my fridge... it's that good. Improvisation is a super power! Totally!
Terrific list!
I completely agree with #1. I had a heck of a time convincing my 6yo that "genius" was not a bad word, considering the way his older said it.
Great pictures!!
Wonderful post, I love the use of pictures.
I love it! And how true! That which does not permanently stain makes you stronger (and happier)!
Oh - you won the "Don't Touch That!" book giveaway :). Send me your address and I'll get it right out (it's on my blog).
Thank you, so many of you, for the lovely compliments. I especially love the last photo too, which seems to me to be so full of wonder.
Aimee, thanks. ;) I'm not worried.
Princess of Something, steal away!
Ahhh, Honey Mama, sleep is so golden.
Bananas, I am flattered. Your list was much funnier.
BusyDad, you rock my world! Email coming right up.
Wonderful list. Captures so much of life with little ones.
Thanks to you all for the compliments on the photos.
Aimeepalooza -- I know. But thanks for saying so. ;)
OhMommy, I promise, we're all supposed to eat a little dirt every day. Good for our immune systems.
Bananas, I'm flattered. Thanks.
Princessofsomething, steal away!
Okay, Blogger is eating comments and making me mad. I'm writing this one more time:
Aimee -- I know, but thanks for saying so. :)
OHMommy -- don't worry; we're all supposed to eat a little dirt every day.
Princessofsomthing -- steal away, with my blessing!
Bananas -- thank you. I'm flattered.
All of you -- so many thanks for the compliments on the photos. This was a fun project.
These were so lovely, all of them. And my favorite lesson is #5.
