Do you trust your fortune cookie fortunes? Does being born in the year of the Dog (or Rooster or whatever you are) seem accurately do describe you?
Yes, these are the weighty things I ponder over my Sunday morning coffee. At least I'm not talking about potty training again.
I never really believed in horoscopes, which is not to say I didn't pore carefully over mine in Seventeen Magazine as a teenager, looking for clues about whether he really liked me or not while listening longingly to Madonna's "Crazy for You." *ahem* But that's what fifteen year olds do, right?
Then I had a dear friend in graduate school who got engaged to a man whose mother did people's star charts. I went to Boston to be the maid of honor in her wedding, and his mother had done a star chart for me. (I knew she was going to; I had to give her my exact day and minute and location of birth for her to do it.) And the things she told me based on my chart were uncannily accurate. Things about how I tend to function in relationships, in conflicts, and under stress, things about what I excel at and my weaknesses. It was fascinating. Then I actually went to the bookstore one day and read a bunch of things about what it's supposed to mean to be a Taurus. What did I find out? If they need a poster child to be the face of the bull for some horoscope campaign, they might as well use me.
Then my interest in horoscopes waned. Not that I strongly believe or disbelieve, just that I got busy writing my research papers for the term and it wasn't a priority. But one thing that has always stuck with me is that Tauruses are an earth sign -- grounded, domestic, pretty stable.
Then I took this (highly accurate, I'm sure) little quiz, which tells me I'm an air element.
Your Element Is Air |
![]() You dislike conflict, and you've been able to rise above the angst of the world. And when things don't go your way, you know they'll blow over quickly. Easygoing, you tend to find joy from the simple things in life. You roll with the punches, and as a result, your life is light and cheerful. You find it easy to adapt to most situations, and you're an open person. With you, what you see is what you get... and people love that! |
Much of the description seems right. I'm a big negotiator of compromises amongst those in my life, pretty adaptable, and a generally cheerful person. The only thing that feels wrong is the whole "Air" thing. Aren't I supposed to be "Earth"? Solid, stubborn, well-grounded? I don't mind air. The very best dreams I ever have are ones in which I'm flying. But no one's ever offered me the "Air" option before. So I find this a bit curious.
Of course, this is just a silly internet quiz, but I'm curious whether it matches anyone's horoscopes or is just some made-up silly written in ten minutes by a monkey in a small room who's paid to churn these things out by the gross. So, if you're curious, take it, and then tell me: What element are you? And does it match your horoscope sign?
Whoa. Maybe I need to go get out my polyester bell bottoms and hippie beads.
Have a fun, lighthearted Sunday!

I go back and forth on the horoscope thing. I'm on the Scorp-Sag cusp, and I seem to fall more on the Sag side, but I don't know -- I tend to not put too much stock in it.
BUT, about 15 years ago, I went to a psychic and it was TOO freaky. She held my watch and channeled my grandma who spoke through her, then "auto-wrote" what came through. EVERYTHING was right on and it disturbed me so much I haven't visited a psychic since...there's just some things I don't think I want to know.
Also -- I'm a water. Seems pretty accurate...
I'm an Air, apparently. Some of it sounds a bit like me - but then, some bits of the others sound like me, too.
I had to look up which star sign I am (can you tell I don't know anything about this!?).. Aries - and no, I don't think I'm like that, either! Maybe we should ask Mr F.....
Fun! I'll have to take it.
And I'm going to enter your Tiny Prints gift card giveaway again. I really want to win!
Somehow I knew this would be the case... I'm an Air also. Just like I'm also a Taurus (which you knew). We really are twins separated at birth by a couple of completely inconsequential years. :)
so according to my horrorscope (I know, I crack me up) I'm an air element. according to the quiz i just took, I'm an earth. so how did you answer the quiz to get MY sign and how did I answer it to get YOURS?? I'll trade ya.
I have a theory about horoscopes (and fortune cookie fortunes and the like).... people interpret it however they are most comfortable interpreting it. Like, there's a list of 10 things and "oh, 7 match me perfectly". But really, it's a general enough list that many people could say the same thing about it based on their own interpretation. Almost too much theoretical stuff for only 1 cup of coffee on a Sunday morning. So I'll stop now :)
I've always thought that people (mainly women) were really into horoscopes until they they were in a stable, committed relationship. Then they completely lose any practical value. All anyone wants to know is where their uncertain love life is going. And once you're married - forget it. I don't think I ever took anything regarding money or success seriously, "you will come into some money at the end of the month...an exciting career change is heading your way," - yeah whatever. But if I read,"a new love is on the horizon..." it was all, "oh really?"
Hmm. I'm torn. I am, like you, a textbook case of my sign (Leo). So I tend to put some stock in the general overview of a particular sign. But daily horoscopes? Not so much.
I had my chart done a while back, and it was spooookily accurate.
I used to read my horoscope everyday but mostly just for laughs. This quiz said I was an air, but I'm an Aries so I think I'm supposed to be fire?
Well, this bull scored earth.
You excel at planning and strategizing.
You could be a champ at chess or Survivor.
Well grounded, you are able to be realistic and rationalize.
On the inside, you have a hard core. It's tough to phase you.
You are super productive, and you are able to think anything through.
Focused and super charged, your instincts are a good guide for your next step.
I'm a sag - a fire sign. And the quiz told me - ta da - that I'm a fire sign.
Your passion and emotion are as obvious as the brightest flame.
You make sparks fly, and your passion always has the potential to burst out.
You are exciting and creative - and completely unpredictable.
You sometimes exercise control, and sometimes you let yourself go.
Friends describe you as sensitive, spirited, and compulsive.
Bright and blazing with intensity, you seem mysterious and moody to many.
Yup. That's SO me. Notice the moody part?
I've been known to read a horoscope just for the fun of it, but I don't put much stock in them.
