Both of my daughters are the popular types who probably get carried around by boys on the grassy hill outside school. How is this possible? Their mother was the brooding one standing in the shadows puffing on a cigarette. Great essay on the process of self-discovery. As always, your writing takes my breath away.

So familiar, so true. I've been amazed over the years when someone from high school referred to me being one of the popular kids- I was not. I was friends with some of the popular kids. I was a coattail rider to the parties. My 20th reunion is fast approaching; I wonder how many will still be existing in their bubbles.

Love this post, but I think that pretty much everyone feels this way about themselves, "popular" or not. My mother recently went to her 50th high school reunion and they all thought the others were smarter, more beautiful, etc. They laughed when they realized they were all living with same silent uncertainty. I did crack up, too, at the listening to "Crazy For You." Girl, I was so there with you. What a great song to be completely and totally depressed to!! (and yes, I was a band nerd!) ;)
